Z-score ranking verification

Rankings you can defend, line by line.

RankCheck recomputes composite rankings from the raw data, compares them with the published version unit by unit, and hands you an Excel workbook whose own formulas reproduce every rank.

  • Deterministic engine
  • No AI in any calculation
  • Every rank reproducible in Excel
z = (x − μ) / σRaw values, each in its own unitsStandardised: distance from the mean in σRanked by composite−2σ−1σμ+1σ+2σ
Each metric is standardised, signed by direction, weighted, and combined into one composite.

How it works

  1. 01

Bring the data as it arrives

Upload CSV or Excel in whatever layout you were sent: states across columns, title rows, footnotes, margin-of-error columns, thousands separators, postal codes. RankCheck reshapes it to one row per unit and lists every change it made. Or import American Community Survey tables by variable code.

    As receivedOne row per unit
  2. 02

Rank it with a method you can state

Choose the metrics, which direction counts as better, and the weights. Set population or sample deviation, the baseline, and how ties break. Quality checks flag outliers, skew, and raw counts that should be shares, and a weight-sensitivity test shows which ranks are fragile.

  3. 03

    Verify, then sign off

Upload the published ranking. Every unit is matched against your recomputation, each difference is listed, and RankCheck tests which methodology changes would explain it. A reviewer confirms a checklist and signs, and the sign-off goes into the audit trail.

The export

The report checks itself.

Every export is a formatted workbook and a PDF. On the Calculation sheet each z-score, composite, and rank is a live Excel formula, and the last column confirms that row agrees with the engine. A client can audit the result without RankCheck installed, and without taking anyone's word for it.

Built for state rankings, open to any list of units.

US state names and postal codes are recognised and results appear on a map. Counties, countries, school districts, or hospitals work the same way: one row per unit, one column per metric.

  • Policy researchers publishing a state index and needing every rank to survive peer review.
  • Newsrooms checking a ranking before reporting on it.
  • Consultants and analysts delivering rankings to clients with the method attached.
  • Funders and auditors confirming that a report's rankings follow from its stated method.
